Monday Poetry Train – On the Day of the Great Miracle

February 9, 2009 by openchannel 9 Comments

I just spent the weekend with my husband in a workshop called The Abyss. It’s one of the Mastery of Self-Expression workshops. I have to say, I haven’t had that much fun with a group of complete strangers in a long time. My mouth hurt from laughing so much and smiling so hard. I told Baby it was like kindergarten for Adults.

For me the workshop was about being present in the moment. That’s the only place you can really live.

~  ~  ~

This week’s poem isn’t a dropped page. It’s an included page from Her Red Book. It was randomly selected by Baby for the train tonight.

On the Day of the Great Miracle

She takes a cat’s eye view of birds
standing on the beach like so many refuges
waiting for the great beast
or angel or other end of the world

The form of the deity     in her head
full of priceless compassion

If they had hands
they would be sailors

It’s already a miracle she thinks
That they can just be     just wait
for the coming of the sea

Behind her the drift of road and vehicle
and the details of dreams
mornings of lemon pulp
afternoons of train conductors
evenings of kitchen drawers
Her liver and chest tight with the
poison of to-do

Today is Sunday and a new yellow stone
Yesterday a sliver of moon with hot and sour soup
A year ago this sun and sky and earth and birds
posed at the edge of the beach
with nothing on their minds
no words of regret on their beaks

Jump on the poetry train.

monday poetry traffic – diary haiku

January 19, 2009 by openchannel 7 Comments

Thanks to Julia at Piece of My Mind for this great idea… found poems from old diaries.

I’ve been digging through all our boxes that are about to be liberated from storage after a year. What a treasure chest of material. I dug out my very first diary, a little red thing with a lock.

The following are slightly altered lines from the diary that I wrote when I was 8 and 9 years old. I removed some words to form the haiku, but the messages have not been changed.

~~~
I am sick. I don’t
know yet but I might be get-
ting tongselitis.
I went off a slide
into a big pool and it
was over my head.
nothing romantic.
wanted to say, I’m in
multiplication now.
Chrissy talks to boys.
had no idea they could be
so interesting.
dear diary, a
boy in square dancing likes me.
I think he is nice.
the best day I ev-
er had is when I went to
Jennifer’s new house.
(six days later)
went to a wedding.
danced with the bride. was the
best day I ever had.
april 18, gave
the key to my diary
to jeannie libert
april 28,
got the key to my diary
back from jeannie
Kendal found a key
to a car.  I stole some of
my dad’s cigarettes.
dear diary, I
like one of the boys at camp.
He is too short, though.
I ALSO have a Monday Poetry post on my OLD BLOG this week.
get some poety. join the TRAIN.
in the realm of really cool
January 3, 2009 by openchannel 2 Comments
Early this morning I awake to what sounds like wounded puppies. In my half-dream state I call out, “somebody’s hurting puppies!”
I stumble out of the bedroom and into the livingroom.  Baby is on the couch reading his virtual New York Times.
“Did you hear those puppies?” I ask.
“Those weren’t puppies… those were orcas,” he replies.
“Oh,” I stumble into the bathroom, “okay.”
Apparently, my husband had found the The Center for Biological Diversity‘s offering of FREE endangered species ringtones. High-quality, authentic sounds of some of the world’s most threatened animals. The idea is that the free ringtones will inspire conversation and visits to the center’s website, as well as invite you to participate in animal rights activism.
You can preview the ringtones HERE
It’s a bit sad and beautiful all at once. It certinainly makes me want to go out and save some animals, though.
One of my favourites: the Mexican Gray Wolf
