Her Red Book
During the writing of her red book, two major events were happening. One, the U.S. was
preparing to go to war with Iraq. Two, Danika fell in love and began a long-distance
relationship, traveling back and forth between Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC. Both
themes of love and war run through the collection, though she hadn’t intended to write
love poems nor political ones. Her intent was simply to write at the beginning and end of
each day as an observer of her own thoughts and actions. An experiment in objectivity,
her red book contains some of Danika’s most beloved work. The melody of the work
lures you in, the journey of it keeps you engaged.
One might find the roots of her poems beginning in the center of the universe.
